In the Press: Annual New Mexico Arts & Crafts Fair

Those lines from Los Lobos’ “Will the Wolf Survive” might reflect Michael and Sandra Kadisak’s concern toward the plight of the wolf and other creatures of the natural world, where the Cochiti Lake couple find much of their artistic inspiration.
They will be among the more than 220 artists participating in the 50th annual New Mexico Arts & Crafts Fair next weekend at Expo New Mexico.

Recognizing that the arts are a unique and integral part of New Mexico culture, the show is open exclusively to artists and craftspeople of New Mexico. The Kadisaks appreciate the show’s commitment to presenting and developing New Mexico artists. “¦

They said their art draws from the inspiration of natural life and the landscapes and environment of New Mexico. “¦

“People in our society tend to see animals, and especially the wolf, as a nuisance or a pest,” Michael Kadisak said.

“Our intent was to go beyond all that and present them with human qualities to a certain extent,” he said.
“We wanted to create a bridge between the human and animal worlds.”
It was a natural progression because wolves since the beginning of time have been teachers. It was from wolves, the artists believe, that humans first learned how to hunt, to create a working society and to survive.

“We didn’t create these animals; we were created with them and we have a responsibility to recognize that and to allow them to live unharmed by human society,” he said. “¦
