Experience wolf pelts, study bones and explore the adaptations that make wolves agile, expert hunters. Visitors will also learn about wolf reintroduction and find out the critical role they play in nature.
“Wolves are keystone predators that help keep elk and deer populations in balance with the habitat,” said Sarah Haft, Zoo Education Specialist. “We hope to provide visitors with a chance to learn more about wolves and to see how the BioPark and partner organizations have helped restore them in the wild.”
Mexican gray wolves (Canis lupus baileyi) were listed as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act in 1976. Populations had been severely reduced as wolves increasingly came into conflict with humans. Today, captive breeding and recovery programs in New Mexico and throughout the Southwest attempt to re-establish this important species in the wild.
Visitors can see the BioPark’s Mexican gray wolves and observe their complex social behaviors. Wolf Awareness Days are included with regular admission. On Saturday and Sunday, October 20 and 21, zoo guests can take advantage of the BioPark’s first Half-Price Weekend with single admission tickets discounted to $5 for adults and $2.25 for seniors (65+) and children (3-12).
