Action Alert: PLEASE STOP H.R. 1581, the “Wilderness and Roadless Area Release Act”
H.R. 1581 Would Essentially Guarantee “No More Wilderness”—FOREVER — which could seriously impact Mexican wolf habitat!
Officially titled the “Wilderness and Roadless Area Release Act,” this bill recently introduced by Rep. McCarthy (R-CA) and co-sponsored by Rep. Pearce (R-NM) would roll back protections from tens of millions of acres of Wilderness Study Areas and wilderness-quality Roadless Areas. The bill would nullify the Roadless Rule and eliminate all Wilderness Study Areas.
Thousands of potential wilderness areas would be opened to road-building and off-road vehicle use– impacts which would render them forever ineligible for the permanent protection they need and deserve, and could severely impact their suitability for Mexican wolves. Too many forest roads in Lobo territory fragment their habitat and increase human access and the likelihood of intentional or accidental killings. Not only would existing protections for these areas be reversed, but future administrations would be prevented from ever protecting Wilderness Study Areas or unroaded Forest Service Lands.
You can read the original alert and send a message to your Representatives at the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance Online Action Center.
