The Southwest Environmental Center Announces 2009 Mexican Wolf Essay and Art Contests

Middle School Students Have An Opportunity To Compete For iPod Touch, $200 Gift Certificate And Trip To Wolf Country

The Southwest Environmental Center and the Las Cruces Museum of Natural History are sponsoring  essay and art contests for middle school students (grades 6th-8th) and home-school students (ages 10-14)  living in southern New Mexico. This contest will provide a great opportunity for students to learn about the Mexican wolf, and express their opinion on this subject.

Essay entries should answer the following question: The Mexican gray wolf, the “lobo,” is returning to the Southwest. What role does the lobo play in nature? Is the return of the lobo important-why or why not?  All essays must be 500-800 words in length, neatly typed, and accompanied by your name, mailing address, phone number, email, name of school, name of teacher, and grade level. 

Visual art projects should depict a Mexican gray wolf in its natural habitat in a way that highlights what you feel are its most important qualities.  Submitted artwork should be a drawing or painting no more than 12 x 18 inches in size, and should include a brief statement (<80 words) explaining your work.  Each piece of art should also include your name, mailing address, phone number, email, name of school, name of teacher, and grade level. If you wish your work returned, please provide a self-addressed envelope.

Contest entries must be received by November 6th, 2009 at 5:00 p.m.  Mail or hand deliver artwork to: Southwest Environmental Center, 275 North Downtown Mall, Las Cruces, NM 88001.  Please submit your essays by email (preferred) to swec@zianet.com or you may mail or hand deliver your essay to the Southwest Environmental Center.
