New Mexico and Arizona bills threaten Mexican wolf recovery

New Mexico Anti-Wolf Memorial

In New Mexico, House Memorial 117 will be heard in the House Agricultural Committee on Monday, March 9 (agenda). House Memorial 117 requests the Governor of New Mexico to “denounce the Mexican wolf recovery program” and to demand that the Department of Interior turn management of Mexican wolves to the state of New Mexico, which has shown itself hostile to wolf recovery. The hearing starts at 8 a.m. in room 315. Please attend if you’re in the area, and whether you can attend or not, please email the committee members and ask them to oppose this anti-wolf memorial. AZ Anti-wolf Bill

Please ask your state senator to reject SB1185 appropriation; wolf recovery; litigation costs (Griffin, Allen, Burges, et al.), a bill that appropriates $250,000 for litigation to challenge any expansion of the Mexican wolf recovery program in Arizona.

These highly endangered animals are an important part of our public lands and heritage. They help to keep their prey species — primarily elk and deer — fitter and as a top predator also provide a check on coyotes and other mid-level predators.

At a time when the budget is tight, it makes no sense to appropriate dollars to hinder an effort that most Arizonans support. Please ask legislators to reject this bill and to instead support recovery of the Mexican gray wolf in the Southwest.

If you do not live in AZ, you can find a sample email message and addresses for AZ state senators here.

Thank you!
