Position Summary:

The Wildlife Outreach Organizer is a 12-15 hour/week temporary contract position with WildEarth Guardians. You will educate New Mexicans about the cruel, unscientific, and outdated practices of trapping and coyote killing contests and engage the public in realizing Guardians’ vision of a state wildlife governance structure that recognizes and respects the critical role native wildlife plays in our diverse ecosystems. Primarily, the Organizer will work to bring public opinion to bear in the form of a 2019 legislative public lands trapping ban in New Mexico. You will meet people in their communities to engage them in our work and to empower them to bring about wildlife policy changes. You will build public support for and raise public awareness of key wildlife issues affecting New Mexico and the southwestern U.S. generally. You will distribute information, build lists, cultivate relationships, train, educate, empower, and communicate in order to achieve our campaign goals. Communication skills, discipline, an outgoing personality, resilience, desire to learn, commitment to advocating for the natural world, a healthy sense of outrage, and the will to win are essential.

By working for this campaign, housed within Guardians’ Wildlife Program, you will have the unique opportunity to be bold, dedicated, and supported as you put in motion strategies to combat unjust, unethical, and outdated practices that kill our native wildlife and endanger the public and companion animals. You will play a key role in fighting for science-based, ethical, and modern wildlife policies, while defending the vulnerable and giving a voice to the voiceless. We hope you will join us. Location: New Mexico (Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Taos, or Las Cruces preferred). Strong candidates in other areas of NM will be considered.

The Organizer will be expected to carry out work both independently and under the direct supervision of our Southern Rockies Wildlife Advocate. The majority of work will occur in the field at community events, meetings, and other outreach opportunities. However, our main office is located in Santa Fe and space and resources (e.g., printer) can be made available to you when needed. A monthly budget will be provided for printed organizing materials, transportation, etc. Candidate must have a vehicle and valid driver’s license and be able to lift 40 lbs.
