Speak up for Wolves!

On Friday, June 25th, the Arizona Game and Fish Commission will consider a Memorandum of Understanding on wolf recovery and may also discuss the future release of wolves in key wolf habitat areas.

Please tell Game and Fish that you support conserving wolves and improving the science-based foundation for the success of the project and ultimately the wolves.  Let them know that you support efforts to increase wolf numbers and the release of a new wolf family into the wild.

The most recent Fish and Wildlife Service report on the Mexican wolf program, the Conservation Assessment, demonstrates clearly that immediate action to increase the number of wild wolves from only 42 is needed to pull Mexican gray wolves back from the brink of extinction.

New releases of Mexican wolves into the wild will increase wolf numbers and strengthen the wild population’s genetic viability. A healthy, captive Mexican wolf family, including mom, dad, five pups, and a yearling, is ready to be released into the wild in Arizona.

Recognizing the critical need to get these eight wolves into the wild, the Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed to release them in an area of eastern Arizona called Engineer Springs.

Please, attend the Arizona Game and Fish Commission meeting on June 25 and speak out in support of wolf recovery and the release of this wolf family into the wild.

It’s easy to participate. The meeting will be held this Friday, from 8-5, in Phoenix at the AZ Game and Fish Department headquarters, and will be broadcast to state offices throughout Arizona (Addresses and Directions).

You can speak from the Phoenix meeting or at a state office by filling out a blue comment card. Just tell the Commission your name, where you live, that you support Mexican wolf recovery, and the proposed release of more wolves in the wilds of Arizona. It’s that simple.

If you absolutely cannot attend, you can send an email to the Commissioners and view the meeting by webcast.

It is essential that Arizona Game and Fish commits to recovery of the wolves. A commitment to increase wolf numbers to a point where we have healthy and sustainable populations of wolves is critical to their recovery.

Wolves exist in the wild because of the actions of people like you who understand their importance to the balance of nature.  Thank you for taking action now to promote their recovery.
