Event: Little Red Riding Hood Lied about Wolves

Wild Creatures You Should Know, a two-part event at the El Paso Museum of Archeology on Saturday, August 4 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, will include a presentation on Mexican gray wolves. Here is the day’s schedule:

1:00 pm – Little Red Riding Hood Lied about Wolves
Presented by “The Wolf Lady” Nancy Bain

This interactive presentation provides facts and fiction about wolves from around the world with special emphasis on the endangered Mexican wolf. Topics include wolf identification, pack makeup and territory marking, wolves and the environment, and wolf interaction with dogs, humans and domestic animals. Participants will see a display of wolf pelts, skulls, replicas of scat, and maps of wolf territories and receive information about wolf sanctuaries and a free educational handout. Nancy Bain is a former Wolf Exhibit Volunteer Host at the El Paso Zoo.

2:00 pm — Venomous Creatures of the Chihuahuan Desert
Presented by Sal Quintanilla, West Texas Regional Poison Center

Learn about venomous insects, spiders, reptiles and some poisonous plants in this bilingual (English & Spanish) program. Sal will show some live invertebrates and maybe a live snake, all in secure cages. A photo display board will show even more venomous creatures to watch out for in our Chihuahuan Desert environment and in our homes and yards. Additional topics include plants used for food, medicine, poison and all three, poisons, how they work, prevention and treatment of bites and stings, protection from poisons around the house, protecting your baby and your pets, and where and how to seek treatment. Free educational handouts and Sal’s presentation are provided by the West Texas Regional Poison Center located in El Paso.
