Event: Learn about wolf behavior Saturday
LAKESIDE — The White Mountain Wildlife and Nature Center’s summer Discovery Program Series kicks into high gear on Saturday, July 7 with its ever popular Wolf Discovery Day, including a visit from the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary. This free program begins at 10 a.m., at the Nature Center’s site at 425 S. Woodland Road in Pinetop-Lakeside.
The Sanctuary will be visiting with one of their live wolf ambassadors, and this will be the public’s opportunity to meet and photograph a life wolf up close (and learn why they do not make suitable pets). Sanctuary Director Layton Cougar will give a talk on wolf behavior and ecology and how attendees can help the Sanctuary meet its mission of educating the public and providing life-time sanctuary to the more than 60 wolves and wolf-dogs which are in residence.
Jean Ossorio and Billie Hughes with the White Mountain Conservation League, local experts and advocates on the Mexican Grey Wolf Reintroduction Program in Arizona and New Mexico will make an informative and enjoyable presentation on wolf recovery efforts, including the impact of last year’s Wallow Fire. Jean and Billie have been actively involved with this program for many years and are knowledgeable about the challenges the program has faced, as well as its successes. Their program will address all sides of this controversial issue.
The Defenders of Wildlife will use Wolf Discovery Day to kick off their ambitious Paseo del Lobo wolf recovery awareness relay hike and events across Arizona. Craig Miller will describe the hike and its events, which formally begin the next day in Alpine.
This program will take place in the Nature Center’s event tent pavilion, where there will be plenty of shade for your comfort. All presenters will be available to interact with attendees and answer questions following their programs.
