Action Alert: Release Aldo and Estella!

Critically endangered Mexican gray wolves, Aldo and Estella, with pups on the way (!) are slated for release in the Gila Wilderness.

Please sign this petition by April 22 and take a few minutes to send a personal e-mail in support of this proposed release. Public support of this release is critical and personal letters have the greatest impact.

Here are a few talking points:

  • Thank USFWS for the proposed translocation (Note: Aldo and Estella were previously captured in Arizona and are now eligible for release in New Mexico).
  • Strongly support their release in April. New pups are expected in early May, so the sooner the better.  New genes are needed in the gene pool to counter inbreeding depression. This release is an important first step to genetically rescue critically endangered Mexican wolves.
  • The proposed release site, McKenna Park, is great wolf country.
  • Support the Mexican Wolf Interagency Field Team efforts to implement proactive measures to successfully mitigate conflict.
  • Let USFWS know that you are a strong supporter of Mexican wolf recovery.

Please email your letter to Dr. Benjamin Tuggle, SW Regional Director, USFWS, and, if you are a New Mexico resident, also send copies to Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich.

Help save Mexican wolves from the verge of extinction!  The USFWS wants to hear from you!

This what our petition says:

We strongly support the translocation of a pair of Mexican gray wolves into the Gila Wilderness. With pups on the way, releasing the Leopold Pack in April 2013 is critical. We also commend USFWS for choosing McKenna Park in prime wolf habitat as the release site.

Our thanks go to the NM Wilderness Alliance and the White Mountain Conservation League for this important alert.
