This is part of a Four State Day of Action to Save the Lobo, with events taking place in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah.
New Mexico’s Governor and Game and Fish Department and Commission have been actively working against the recovery of endangered Mexican gray wolves for some time, ignoring the majority of New Mexico voters who support wolf recovery.
In May, 2015, for the first time in 17 years, the New Mexico Game Commission arbitrarily voted to deny Ted Turner’s Ladder Ranch a permit to continue to assist with the Mexican gray wolf reintroduction. Ladder Ranch’s appeal of this decision is item 10 on the January 14 Commission meeting agenda.
New wolf releases are urgently needed to improve the wild wolf population’s declining genetic health, but in June, the New Mexico Game and Fish Department denied permits for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to conduct releases of Mexican gray wolves into New Mexico. The Commission upheld this decision in September.
And in November, Governor Susana Martinez sent a letter, along with the Governors of Arizona, Colorado, and Utah, pressuring Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe for a Mexican gray wolf recovery plan based on the states’ anti-wolf agenda rather than what the best available science says is necessary for the wolves to thrive.
You can also help by signing a petition to the Governor and NM Game Commission and by sending messages to Secretary Jewell and Director Ashe urging them not to let state politics interfere with science based recovery.
We can overcome state opposition to wolf recovery if we all work together. Thank you for acting on behalf of these critically endangered wolves.
