Wolf from Mexico is Named Sonora!

Thank you, to everyone who participated in our naming contest for the wandering wolf. Close to 700 people, young and old, joined the contest to choose a name for f1530. The winning name is Sonora—a fitting name for the young wolf who traveled from northern Mexico to Arizona.

Sonora crossed the border when she ranged from a release site in Northern Mexico to Southeastern Arizona. She was born on a reserve in Sonora, Mexico last year and then released about 90 miles south of the border with Arizona. After crossing that border, she was removed from Arizona and put in captivity in New Mexico by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

We think Sonora should be released into suitable habitat soon so she can continue to help the struggling wild Mexican gray wolf population recover.
